High School Tennis .. the importance of playing tennis in High School

High school tennis is a wonderful experience and if you enjoy playing tennis, it is something you do not want to miss out on when you get to high school.

A few days ago, I turned sixty-four years old and I heard from my high school doubles partner. We have been good friends for fifty years! I also heard from several other teammates that I have been friends with since my days playing for the Prospect Knights. High school tennis is a wonderful experience and if you enjoy playing tennis, it is something you do not want to miss out on when you get to high school.

So, how do you get ready to play on your high school tennis team? First, you must just do it. Do you know what TikTok, Call of Duty and tennis have in common? The more you do it the better you get. Play tennis as often as possible; during the school year, I recommend playing at least three times a week. During the summer, I recommend playing at least five times a week.

Practice makes perfect however it is not the only thing you need to do to prepare for high school tennis. You need to play matches. Learning how to play points is no different than learning how to hit forehands and backhands – you must do it over and over again to get good. And FYI – there is no such thing as Zoom tennis matches. Sign-up for match-play, tournaments, team tennis and other match-play opportunities. And do not forget to play doubles. A typical high school tennis match has 3 players playing singles and 8 players playing doubles, so having the ability to play both singles and doubles is super important.

One more important factor – your form. Practice is great however you need to be practicing with good form. Private lessons are the best way to make sure you are hitting each stroke with the correct form. Your tennis skills will improve quicker, if you are practicing with the proper form on each of your shots.

You can make your high school tennis team if you start preparing now. Making lifelong friendships, being part of a team and playing a sport you enjoy is what high school tennis is all about. Many of my students have shared that some of their fondest high school memories have come from time spent with their teammates, both on and off the courts. Being part of their tennis team gives many students the confidence boost they need to be successful as the begin their high school journey. It truly is a memorable experience so let’s get started today!
